Happy National Nutrition Month!!! Doesn’t it feel like just yesterday we were saying “Happy New Year!”? National Nutrition Month is a national campaign set by the Academy of Nutrition of Dietetics to celebrate all things nutrition. This year the theme is Savor the Flavor of Eating Right! Our goal this month (and pretty much every day really) is to find ways we can eat healthy while not having to sacrifice flavor but rather enjoying the taste. I’m super excited to explore different ways that we can savor the flavor.
Here are three tips on how you can Savor the Flavor of Eating Right:
1. Explore cuisines from different cultures:
Exploring cuisines from different cultures gives you a chance to taste foods that you haven’t eaten before. It also gives you an opportunity to be introduced to different types of food that you’ve never had before.
2. Experiment with different fruits and vegetables:
For me nothing is more exciting then trying a new fruit or vegetable! Just imagining is this going to sweet or bitter, juicy or dry, etc? Adding fruits and vegetables can be a good low calorie and colorful addition to your plate. They are also jam-packed with fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins/minerals.
3. Cooking with herbs and spices.
Herbs and spices like garlic and cinnamon can be used to not only enhance the flavor of foods but can also be used to help you lower your salt and sugar intake. Herbs are generally known as the leafy part of a plant, while spices are known as any other part of the plant (root, stem, bulb, etc). Some of they can add aroma to your foods and can completely change not only the color but the flavor of any dish. Depending on the spices used when cooking the same meal can make you feel like you are sitting in a Italian vineyard or having dinner overlooking the Taj Mahal!
During the month of March we will be exploring the flavors of different herbs and spices. How many herbs and spices can you name?
