Fruit Collage

I like to think of fruits as nature’s candies! They are a sweet alternative to candy and have natural sugars!! According to the MyPlate method it is recommended we make half of our plates fruits and vegetables at every meal. Does this mean that fruits and vegetables are extremely important components to a healthy lifestyle? Yes! Yes, they are! In case you don’t know, I’m  going to give you a brief run down of why.

Top Five Reasons Why Fruit and Vegetables Are Awesome:

1.They are full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants which help your body run optimally and help fight off cancer causing toxins in your body.

2.They are loaded with fiber which helps with heart health, diabetes maintenance, and help move the wastes in your colon out of your body.

3.They help add flavor and color to what could have been a boring dish. (Imagine eating a bowl of spaghetti and meatballs with no tomatoes?)

4.They make awesome low-calorie snacks. (1/4 cup of hummus and carrots is about 100 calories!)

5.They are so many different types of fruit and vegetables indigenous to different lands. They can be sweet, sour, or bitter, which makes for lots of fun when experimenting with new fruits and vegetables.

More on point 5:

Each region in the world has specific fruits and vegetables that are native to their land. There are so many fruits and vegetables that you most likely haven’t tasted or even heard of before. (Have you ever tasted a starfruit?) Even as a dietitian-nutritionist I don’t know all of the fruits and vegetables in the world. This is one of the many joys of my profession. I get to go to random markets and try random foods all in the name of work!  πŸ™‚

I have no idea what is the name of this fruit! (The market didn’t have signs or name tags next to it.) But it looks exciting!

In order to celebrate National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month,  I challenge you to try a new fruit or vegetable once a week. Head over to the Food section of the site to see some of the new fruits and vegetables that I’ve discovered along my journey and some oldies but goodies as well.

Until next time,
