We are in the second month into the new year! Although February is the shortest month of the year it is jam packed with a lot of things. This month we celebrate Black History Month, the Super Bowl, NBA All Star Weekend, National Wear Red day, Valentine’s Day, National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, Fit Kids Awareness Month, etc. So many things happening!

If you are like me then you probably have a long list of new year’s resolutions and you might be feeling overwhelmed with tackling your overzealous list of resolutions (I know at least I am)!

Here are some tips on how I try to manage:

1. Prioritize,  Prioritize, and Prioritize some more! 

*Not everything on your list  is going to be done at once. Also all items on your list are equally important or meaningful to you. Separate your resolutions into three categories. My categories are important, medium, and bonus.

First Category: Things in this category are the things that I absolutely have to work on or else I will be really disappointed with myself. One thing in that category for me is my blog.

Second Category: Things in this category are everyday resolutions that I should be doing anyways but make excuses on reasons not to do them. These are the resolutions that are long running and ever changing. Some resolutions that are in this category for me are :working out and improving my finances.

Third Category : Things in this category are the things that just make life more fun. For example in this category I have traveling, going to the museum more often, and my cultural book challenge. If these things do not happen it won’t be a big deal.

2.Focus, Dedicate and Revisit!  

It’s is important that you put focus into your resolutions, dedicate time, and revisit your resolutions. Prioritizing your resolutions is a good first step to help you focus on your resolutions. Set aside once a month to revisit your resolutions. See if they still make sense for you and what is going on in your life at the moment. I like to set time once a week to see where I am with my resolutions. If something isn’t working out I take time to figure out why it isn’t working and if I should even be working on this resolution at the moment. (Last year my resolution was to improve my blog but I was so busy with the dietetic internship. I had to revisit that resolution and push it back for next year!)

3. Have fun!

New Years Resolutions are supposed to be made to help us improve ourselves. Becoming a better person should be fun! You are making an effort to do something that you want to do. Life is supposed to be joyful. You only have one life to live!

What does this have to do with nutrition? 


Nutrition and being healthy is more than just the food you eat. It is also about your mindset, your habits, your environment, and so much more. Having a good handle on your new years resolutions can also help you better get a handle on your health.
