So May went by just as fast as it came! I just wanted to share a little recap of how I celebrated Haitian Heritage Month and Asian Pacific Islander Month.

Haiti: 

As mentioned before Haiti is located on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. The cuisine mostly features influences from Spanish, French, and African cultures. However, it also includes influences from the Middle East and Indigenous people too. Did you know that the cooking technique of barbecuing originated from the native Arawak Indians?

Haitian cuisine uses rice, beans, plantains, yams, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, nutmeg, allspice, and other herbs. One of the most popular dishes in Haitian cuisine is called diri a djon djon (black mushroom rice with lima beans). This rice is served with chicken or any other type of meat (beef, goat, etc). Seafood is also used frequently in both Haitian and Thai cuisine.

Le Caye Restaurant:

In the beginning of the month, I was able to go to a Haitian Restaurant called Le Caye. This restaurant is located in the Fort Greene area of Brooklyn. It was a really nice restaurant. It had a nice island feel to it. I was able to get some of my childhood favorite dishes: legume, diri a djon djon, and fried plantains.

Thailand:

Thailand is a country located in the Golden Triangle section of Southeast Asia, between Burma and Cambodia. The name Thailand means Prathat Thai, which translates to “Land of the Free”. Did you know that Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that’s never been colonized? Thai cuisine can be very spicy and uses lemongrass, mangos, papaya, vinegar, chilies, curries, and coconuts among many other different ingredients. One of the most popular dishes in Thai cuisine is called pad thai, which is a type of noodle. It is said that Thai food has to have balance; they combine hot, sour, salty, and sweet flavors in every dish.

Thailand’s CenterPoint Signature:

I randomly stumbled upon this restaurant and I’m so glad I did. For some reason I’ve never been too fond of Thai food. That’s because the food I usually choose doesn’t really sit well with me. However I decided to get out of my comfort zone and give it another try. I’m glad I did! Here’s what I ate:
