I wish my hair could look that nice after going to the gym!

Focusing on my physical body is one of my biggest challenges when it comes to my personal wellness quest. This part is challenging for me for several reasons. First, working out and some physical activities are hard to do and hurts. Sometimes I get lazy and just don’t want to be bothered with sweating, hurting, and having my heart racing. Other times I feel like reading a book or writing a paper is more important and less time-consuming than working out.

However, my body has been kicking me in the tush. For the past year and a half I’ve been showing signs and symptoms of autoimmune disease (doctors think it may be arthritis). If there is anything that will make you take your physical well-being serious it’s probably the idea that your body could one day fail you. Now that my schedule has slightly lighten up and my bones and joints are giving me hell, I decided to renew my gym membership and actually use it.

So far I’ve managed to do the elliptical and spinning (which I’m not to crazy about).One challenge some people have when it comes to physical activity is money. You are in luck if you live in NYC. The NYC Parks and Recreation Department have recreation centers (Rec Centers) all over the five boroughs. The Rec centers have gyms and fitness classes at an affordable price ($50/6 months for people aged 18-64 years old or $100 annually). They have a wide variety of fitness classes, from spinning, ab blast, kickboxing, yoga, and hot hula! The best part is that once you are a member you can go to any of the Rec centers! Benefits of Physical Activity:

So why bother with physical activity? Increased physical activity is related to better sleep, stronger muscles and bones, improved mental health, and decreased changes of developing certain diseases and cancers like heart disease, breast cancer, and colon cancer. Any fitness guru can go on for hours on why physical activity is important.
